The “Seinfeld Strategy” to Motivating Yourself Toward Goals

When it comes to accomplishing anything — whether it be personal or professional goals — we all need some motivation to push us toward completing tasks and goals that we have set in place for ourselves.

Aytekin Tank wrote an article for Entrepreneur.com and he believes that momentum is the key ingredient for motivation. “Success doesn’t always start with extraordinary motivation. Just like a snowball gathering speed, sometimes motivation builds after we begin. Once we take even the tiniest step forward, momentum will soon keep you rolling. That’s because sustained momentum toward a goal creates a compound effect — the principle that consistent, incremental effort can produce dramatic changes over time.”

What is your motivation to fuel your momentum? Tank brings to light the “Seinfeld Strategy” that Jerry Seinfeld implemented and was a big factor in his comedic success: “Years ago, [Seinfeld] hung a wall calendar in a prominent location and drew a big, red ‘X’ through the day if he had written new jokes. As the Xs began to pile up, his motivation grew. ‘You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt,’ Jerry Seinfeld told a young comedian. ”Your only job is to not break the chain.’”

Having a visualization of tracking your successes drastically helps momentum to not “break the chain.” When you can see how well you’re doing, it’s easier to keep at it and keep moving forward.
